What a fantastic Graduation we had today

Stuart and Serge both visited us today for the graduation.  We honoured to welcome them into our Dojo.

We started out with our normal warm up and moved into our mount escape work.  We worked 2 options today and will continue with a 3rd in our next class.  These mount escape techniques and drilling will be a permanent part of our Jiu Jitsu journey.

Now for the graduation highlights.

Aidan has earned his Yellow belt.  He showed a warrior spirit at the no gi competition and had 2 had matches.  He bought home a silver medal.  We are all very proud of Aidan's had work leading up to the competition. Keep up the great work!

Olivia earned her grey belt.  Olivia showed her bravery at her first competition.  She had 2 hard matches and fought hard.  Olivia has learned the intensity needed to compete and what she needs to work on for the next competition.  Olivia showed a warrior spirit in her matches and did not give up.  Well done!

Oscar earned a second stripe today.  He has discovered that what he has learnt so far is working well for him when he spars with the team.  Oscar's has become more focused in class and in enjoying drilling with his team mates.  Great job!

Pietro earned his first stripe today. He has been training well and has had increased focus.  He has found that the techniques in his toolbox are working for him whilst sparring.  Pietro enjoys our sparring sessions and I'm very pleased to see him learning how to take control of his opponent.  Excellent work!

At the end of the graduation Stuart surprised everyone by pulling a brown belt out of is gi.  I was speechless.  I wasn't expecting to have a brown belt in the near future, yet there it was in front of me.  Thank you Auckland BJJ, Stuart and Serge for giving me a home to continue my Jiu Jitsu journey.  I'm overwhelmed by the support they both have given me and our kids school.   Thank you to all of the team at Auckland BJJ for being such awesome people and wicked training partners.

Easter Training Update

Good day everyone.

We had 2 new students join us today.  They were quick at picking up the beginning fundamental movements.

We worked on the first mount retention and then moved into mount escape.  This was an excellent refresher for the students that will compete next Saturday and an essential first lesson for the new students.  Everyone was really focused at class today which allowed us to cover a lot of ground.

One more session before the big competition!  Everyone has worked hard and now it's time to go and test your Jiu Jitsu.  Win or lose one thing is certain, your BJJ will improve and you will learn a lot from the experience.

Tuesday training update

Today was all about the reverse hip escape and frame.  Everyone made a great effort in learning this new movement.  We will be working on the hip escape, reverse hip escape, frame and belly down movements in the coming weeks.

Only 2 classes left until the bjj competition.  All that are not competing are welcome to come watch their team mates.  The competition is at http://www.asbstadium.co.nz/

The kids usually start at 9:00am.  If you come along it's advised to pack a snack and a drink.

A Saturday Surprise

What a great day for Jiu Jitsu.  We had a special visitor today.  Henry was a student at our old gym a while back. He is a great sparring partner for Aidan as well as a good friend

Today we worked on our hip escape.  We showed how our warm up hip escape movement works in our Jiu Jitsu game.  The first use of the hip escape is to escape from side control and recompose a guard position.  This will need some more work as a reverse hip escape movement/frame is required to complete the sequence.  The second option that we showed was to escape side control to a belly down position and progress to driving forward for a sweep.  Everyone got the concept of the sequence.  As always more drilling is the key to mastery.

We had a great rolling session at the end of class.  I was very impressed with everyone's performance. I really liked that everyone was looking for control before attempting an attack.

I found this cartoon which illustrates the power of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Saturday training report - 5 more classes until the competition!

Good day everyone

Today we started putting some foot work into our tool boxes. We worked on a guard pass drill that puts us in the knee on belly position.  Everyone did well on their first attempt at this drill. We will continue working this technique as it will become part of the warm up in the future for the more advanced students.

We learned how to pass the open guard of an opponent that is sitting up.  Everyone liked the shove to the forehead to put their opponent on their back so they could execute the pass to knee on the belly.

After we finished our stretching we worked on some balance exercises.  Balance is super important in any sport and in our daily lives.  We will continue to challenge our balance abilities in class.

Special thanks to Aidan for cleaning the mats today.  We all love our super tidy dojo.
