Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for your child?

It's one of the most effective and tested fighting arts in the world!

95% of fights end up on the ground.  Jiu Jitsu will give your child an advantage if they were to end up in a fight with a bully.

Anyone can learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu isn't just for the elite fighter.  It's an excellent martial art for self defense.  Young, old, big or small can learn the techniques and have a great time in the process.

It's great for physical fitness

Ground fighting is one of the best workouts a person can have.  It's fantastic at building core strength, flexibility and cardio fitness.

It builds character

Your child will learn how to lose and learn how to win with honor and respect. They will discover how to be a good training partner and in the process gain new friends.

It promotes continuous self improvement

Learning BJJ will put your child on a path to discovering new techniques and strategies.  You'll find them looking forward to every class so they can absorb more knowledge.

What students' learn on the mat can be applied in their daily life

Jiu Jitsu will help your child calm their mind in difficult situations.  They will learn to be the rock in the storm.

Jiu Jitsu teaches good sportsmanship

The close contact nature of Jiu Jitsu requires us to have respect for our training partners.  Our dojo etiquette is an essential part of learning sportsmanship and how to be a good training partner.

It is a great opportunity to socialize

Jiu Jitsu is a great place to meet new life long friends and families.  The etiquette of the school fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Saturday morning at the dojo

We had 2 new students come out for a try.  I hope they both enjoyed their first class with us.  The first to arrive was Hendrick.  He is new to BJJ and really enjoyed getting going with the class.  The second to arrive was Rossi.  She has just moved from the US and is a yellow belt from a Gracie Barra gym in Georgia.  Her father is a purple belt so I naturally recommended that he come out to Auckland BJJ Epsom for a roll.  Rossi had some really technical rolls with Aidan and the other students.  We look forward to training again with Hendrick and Rossi.

We worked on how to take down a person that bear hugs us today.  It was a good introduction for our newer students and a chance for the older students to revisit the technique.  We will be working the bear hug defense a lot the next few weeks.  This is one of the common tactics I've seen bullies using on the school grounds along with the headlock.

We will be continuing to train during the school break.  Our class times will remain the same.  I look forward to seeing you all on the mats.

School break

School break is coming up.  We will continue classes through the break.

We are focusing on self defense techniques for the next few weeks.  If you are able to attend you will be rewarded with the ability to protect yourself by applying the techniques you have learnt.  Repetitive and consistent practice are the key to honing your skills.  Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

See you on the mats!

Tuesday training report

Hello again everyone

We started by reviewing the 2 headlock escapes we worked on in our Saturday class.  We then moved onto an escape with a take down and cross face maneuver to break free of the headlock.  Everyone enjoyed working this technique.  It's always a lot of fun when we work on take downs.

We ended class by giving stripes to the students that were unable to attend our Saturday class.  I'm very proud of everyone's effort and focus in our Tuesday class.  What a great team we have in all our classes. A big well done to all of you.

Graduation 30/06/2018

Good day everyone

Thanks to everyone who attended the graduation this morning.  We went straight into our warm up to get our blood pumping.  We worked on grip breaking and headlock escapes.  Everyone did a fantastic job learning the techniques.  It was great to see the parents that participated having a blast with the children.

Everyone has been working very hard on their Jiu Jitsu.  Today's graduation is a time where we get to recognize everyone's hard work.  I'm very fortunate to have so many students that have parents that train Jiu Jitsu.  Jiu Jitsu is a great skill to pass on to your child and I firmly believe it will make them a better and stronger person in life.  I can't thank all the parents enough for all the support you have given our school.

Saturday training report

Hello everyone

It was a cold day at the dojo this morning.  An intense warm up was essential to get everyone's pistons pumping.

After our warm up  we had a great time doing the leap frog drill.  Once everyone had learnt to use momentum to carry their body over the top the drill went extremely well.  We then progressed to leap frogging and then shooting under the legs.  The shooting skill is important for take down work we will be doing in the weeks to come.

We moved onto reviewing the turtle escape and then adding another variation to the escape.  Everyone had to escape from me to show they had good technique.  Even the smallest student was able to execute the escape on me by using leverage instead of strength.  Well done to all!

Saturday training update

Good day everyone
Turtle Position

Today we had a new student join us.  He joined in and everybody was very welcoming.

Today was our second class on back attack.

We started with the Crazy Horse game.  Each student had to take my back and stay on whilst I moved around the mat.  This drill is to learn the importance of strong hooks, seat belt grip and proper head position.  This game is always a hit.

Back Mount

We drilled moving on top of our partner whilst they are in turtle position.  We drilled with hands behind the back and then with hands on our partners back.  We moved onto rolling the person in turtle over by using the seat belt grip and proper leg position to take the back.

Everyone is equiped with enough tools now to start some sparring.  In BJJ we call it rolling.  For children the rounds are 3 minutes long.  Great fun was hand by all that rolled today.  It was so much fun that we extended class to continue with more matches.  Great work and sportsmanship everyone.  Well done.
