Tuesday's training report

Wow it was hot Tuesday!  I was very happy that everyone got through training without any complaints about the heat.  That's the tough mental attitude that I love seeing in all of you.

It was fantastic to have a new student visit us.  She enjoyed the class and we all hope we see her again.  I'm very pleased to see that everyone was a good helper with the new student.

In our class today we reviewed the first mount escape and then transitioned to the second.  the second one will need more work.  It is a bit more technical however I'm confident that everyone will have it in their tool box for the competition.

Competition Rules

Good day everyone

It's time for everyone to become familiar with the competition rules.  I've placed a link below for the IBJJF rule book.  Let me know if you have any questions or need clarification about any of the rules.  See you on the mats!

Saturday at the Dojo

Three of a perfect pair for training today.

The boys learned a new mount escape today.  It took a bit of work, but we got there in the end.  There are a few more steps in the new escape.  This technique will prove to beuseful in competition with some more practice.  We will review the technique Tuesday.

I will have the BJJ Game Plan document for everyone Tuesday.  This will allow the students to sit and think about what techniques they have learned and in what scenarios they would put them into practice.  We can do it as group in class.  I did this brain storming with Aidan last year and it was a huge eye opener of how much Jiu Jitsu he has learned.

Here is a challenge for our students

Aidan and I have been doing a push up challenge.

We started with 10 push up before bed. The next night we did 11 and the next we did 12 and so on.  The goal is to get to 30.

The push up should be done  slowly and with proper technique.  It is better to start from the knees and use good technique and when your strength grows move to your toes.  Check out the video below for some tips on getting it right.

Training report

Tuesday afternoon training we had a good refresher in the backward break fall.  After break falls we went onto work on 2 take downs.

We practiced our Maui Thai clinch and worked on having good position and moment to create opportunities for a take down.

The first one we drilled was the knee tap.  This is a very effective and simple take down.  Everyone went well with this one.  We moved onto the Kosoto Gari.  This take down is another simple and effective take down.  We will be drilling both of these take downs often to make them a reflex reaction.  With take downs timing is key.  They must be setup by moving your opponent to create the opportunity to attack whilst they are vulnerable.

We finished up with a very active king of the mat game.  I was impressed that everyone worked their sweeps well.  Hip bump was the go to sweep of the game.

Saturday training update

Self defense is the focus for the next few weeks.  We worked on two break falls.  The first was the backward break fall (Ushiro Ukemi).  Everyone got the concept however we'll need to keep practicing to make it an automatic reflex. Next was the break fall to the side (Yoko Ukemi).  This one is a little trickier so we will be working on it more in the future.  The break falls are very important for our next phase of training.

We will be learning take downs in the next few weeks.  For those that want to compete, I will help students pick 3 of the take downs that work best for them and drill those consistently.

Break fall info:
Ukemi is one of the most important aspects of the martial arts and self-defense. It's also probably the most neglected.  Ukemi (breaking one’s fall) is the art of "taking it," the ability to fall, roll, or be forcefully thrown to the ground and get up unscathed.

First training in 2018

Happy New Year to all.

Today was a lot of fun.  We are training no gi to get ready for the upcoming NZ Grappler competition and work on our self defense.

We worked through everybody's favorite animals in our warm up.

The position we worked on today was side control.   We worked through 3 side control positions.  The drilling went well and everyone learned how to have a heavy hip.

We played a game to mark getting side control a little more real.  The game was Crawlers and Chasers.  What a fun game.  The crawlers starts about 5 meters from the chaser.  We count to three and go.  The goal is for the chaser to role over the crawler and get a side control position.  Everyone did a really great job.

Competition schedule for 2018

For those how want to compete in 2018 we will be tailoring our training for the competitions.  The first event in Auckland is on April the 7th and is a no gi contest.

Classes will be no gi to get ready for the competition.  We will be focusing on self defense, strategies for the upcoming matches and the rules of the game.

Attire for class will be a rashy top and spats and shorts.  This is what the students will wear at the comp as well.

It's not mandatory to compete.  If you child shows an interest in competing than that's great.  If don't want to compete that is great too.  They will be part of our junior training camp for their team mates.  Either way they will learn a lot in the coming months.

Training resumes January 2nd.  Let's make the most of it and bring home some medals.
