Training hard on a Saturday morning

The comp kids!
We had 2 fantastic classes on Saturday morning.  Everyone was super focused which allowed our students to have a very productive class.

We are counting down to the competition in September.  Our training camp is exclusively for those that want to compete.  Students that aren't competing are welcome to stay and watch the matches.  We will open the rolling session to all students after the competition.

I was impressed with all the competitors that rolled in the camp. It's time to make it real so everyone is ready for the level they will encounter at the comp.

A cold Saturday morning on the mats

We arrived at the Dojo early and boy it was cold.  We did a quick tidy up and got ready for the students to arrive.

We made a ring of belts for the younger students to have a morning stretch when they arrive. The belts are all Aidan's except for one white belt which is mine.  They represent the journey Aidan has been on whilst learning Jiu Jitsu.

We went right into working our arm bar drill and arm bar from the guard technique.  We are progressing nicely and I expect in a few more class our students will have a good working understanding of the technique.

We had a great rolling session after class.  The skill level of everyone is increasing with every session.  It's absolutely wonderful to see the team use the techniques they have learnt in the session.  The matches are looking more technical with every training.

Saturday refresh and new technique

Today we did a quick review of our armbar from the mounted position.  I was impressed to see that everyone remember all the details of the submission.  It's looking like our team have fallen in love with the armbar from mount.

The next technique we introduced today was the armbar from the closed guard position.  We started by doing a drill to get the swing motion working and move our body into the right position for the attack.  After everyone had a basic idea of how the drill worked we moved onto learn the armbar.  I expect we will be polishing this submission for a while to get it fully programmed into our students tool box.  Today was an excellent start.  Well done team.

Every armbar our students learn for the sport aspect of BJJ can also be used in a self defense situation.  This attack has many variations and can be applied form nearly every position in our game.

Graduation 29-06-2019

Another fantastic graduation for Auckland Kids BJJ!

For those that weren't able to attend don't worry.  We will catch everyone up when they return from holiday or illness.  It was a tough term with everyone getting sick including myself.

Jamie, Oliver's dad, was our photographer again for our graduation.  He took another set of fantastic photos of the team.  Thanks so much for volunteering your time to help us out.

Thanks to Serge and Stuart for coming out on a Saturday morning. Their support is crucial in making our development.  Stuart recently received his 2nd degree for his black belt.  This means he's now able to award the black belt to those in our adult school that are ready.  It's very important that we have a level of competency with our students that progress to a higher belt. Serge, Stuart and I are members of the IBJJF.  The IBJJF holds their members to a very high standard.  You are welcome to visit the site and have a read about the organisation.

In New Zealand the competitions use the SJJIF rules.  I've added a page to our site that has a video and pdf of the rules for those who wish to compete.

Now for the fun part.
