Today was our first juniors class and as expected we had a great turn out and a super focused group. Well done junior team!
Our goal was to work on taking the back using our seat belt grip and strong hooks. We played the crazy horse game to test our students on how well they can keep the position. As expected the crazy horse test was a hit with the students. We went over the safety rules when taking the back. I can't emphasize enough the importance of not pulling your opponent straight back once you have taken their back.
Our next technique was to learn a submission. We started a good introduction of the lapel choke from the back. More work to be done however every student learned a lot today and with the new class format things will be progressing quicker.
Our senior class was super awesome as well. We worked on the same techniques and all the boys and girls nailed it. We've been working a chain of positions and the back take is the last one for this group. Our chain consists of side control to knee on the belly then slide to mount. If the person that is mounted rolls then the back take is executed. This chain will give the newer students tools in their tool box to start rolling. The goal is to have technical sparring which will start very soon for our newer students.
I'm very proud of everyone for their focus and can do attitude today. Splitting the class by age group has had the desired effect we needed. I'm looking forward to many more fantastic classes.

New class added on Saturday
Good day everyone
I'm very excited about our new Juniors class that is starting tomorrow. I'm looking forward to being able to have more focus on each student.
Class times on Saturday are as follows.
9:00am Juniors class
10:00am Seniors class
If the timing works out we may add another juniors class on Tuesday. More information to come.

We're growing
Good day everyone
With the increase in student numbers we've decided to add another class on Saturday morning
starting at 9:00am.
This class will be for the younger students which will achieve 2 goals. The first being a smaller class size so I can have more one on one contact to help the children. The second is having a focus on the basic movements and techniques to improve coordination and balance.
Our 10:00am class will be for the older students. again with a smaller class size closer attention to each student will be able to be achieved.
Our Tuesday class will remain the same format. All ages can attend at this point. As more younger children join up we will start a 3:30 class.
I'm open to feedback about the new class time for Tuesday's so please let me know your thoughts.

Saturday morning on the mats
Good day everyone
What a great class today. We did our normal warm up however towards the end I challenged the kids to try the chicken walk drill. It was great fun watching everyone have a go. The next challenge was dragging their training partner across the mat by holding the lapels. Hard work however we all need to improve our leg and grip strength.
Positions we worked on today were side control and knee on the belly. We had a great introduction into these positions. We will carry on with working through the variations of side control and other positions in future classes.
Parking
We have more parking available off of Nixon street. There is a new red gate by the dojo entrance that has a punch down lock. The code is on the white board at the dojo. You can text me and I can give it to you as well.

Back in action
Hello everyone
With the help of the doctors and nurses at the Auckland ED department, I'm back home and back to work. Class will resume Tuesday at 4:30pm. I look forward to getting back on the mat with all of you.

Class cancellation
Hi everyone
I'm in hospital with a kidney stone. I'm being well looked after and hope to be released late tomorrow afternoon. Unfortunately our Saturday morning class at 10:00am is cancelled. I'll keep everyone updated on my progress. I hope to resume class this Tuesday.

BJJ self defense review
This morning we did a review of the techniques that were taught over the past weeks.
We started with grip breaking. We added a back fist strike once the grip was broken. I think everyone enjoyed giving me a good crack to the jaw.
We progressed into the 2 headlock escapes. I was impressed with everyone's effort in this very important escape.
Lastly we did the bear hug escapes.
Everyone enjoyed taking Aidan down whilst they demonstrated their technique. Great work being the crash test dummy Aidan.
What a great attitude and focus everyone had today. I find it very rewarding to see you all progress in your Jiu Jitsu skill.
I can't wait to see you all back on the mats!
