Saturday's armbar session

Today was all about armbar from the mount position.  Both classes did a fantastic job putting the steps to together to accomplish a submission.  More drilling is needed to make it sharp and tight.

We had our half hour rolling session again.  We worked on how to be prepared mentally before starting a match.  Everyone tried to work their new armbar into there game.  We had a number of attempts and a few finishes.

It won't be long until we switch to armbar in the guard. The armbar submission is a fundamental part of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's self defence.  What's beautiful about the armbar is it can be applied in any position.  The endless variations of the technique allow this to happen. All of our kids enjoyed added today's technique into their tool box.  Well done team!

Going for gold

We had an awesome result at the competition Saturday.

Congratulations to Olivia for winning the gold medal in her division. Olivia lost her first match however she regrouped and won by submission in her next 2 matches.  Both submissions were collar chokes in the standing position.  I was so impressed that she remembered what I had coached the team weeks ago.  We went over setting up the choke in the standing position if the take down wasn't working.  Well done Olivia!

Our other students fought hard and showed everyone that they were a force to be reckoned with.

Our second Olivia  "O'Lilly" had a huge bracket to fight through.  She entered the mat with a warrior spirit and went right to work.  I was so proud to see her truly enjoy her matches.  Her opponents were very skilled, but that didn't slow her down at all.

A big shout goes to Olaf for fighting in his first comp.  He was super nervous when he arrived at the event.  After his first match the nerves were gone and he went on the have some very intense matches. Great work Olaf!

Hendryk went in guns blazing and had 2 tough matches. Well done for having a great attitude and exemplary sportsmanship.

Saturday training with the best team ever

We had a great session getting ready for the competition.  Today was about practicing the submissions that everyone will use at the comp.  Our team also worked on sweeps and mount escapes to make sure their techniques are sharp and successful.

Our rolling session was fantastic.  Everyone was showing off their techniques with great effect.  I'm very happy with the girls on our team for giving all the boys a hard time when rolling.

Our plan in the next term is go back to teaching the kids BJJ self defense techniques as well as the sport aspect of Jiu Jitsu.

2 more comp training's before the big show!

Hi All

Thank you for all the emails wishing me well with my illness.

We have 2 more Saturday's to sharpen our game for the competition.  Our rolling sessions have been fantastic.  I'm super happy to see clean techniques being applied and everyone having fun sparring.

Unfortunately due to work commitments we will not have class this Tuesday.  We will be back in action Saturday.

Our first competition rolling session

We had 2 fantastic classes this morning.  We challenged our students to 2 new movements in our warm up. We worked on a take down to prepare the students that want to compete in June.  I was impressed with how quickly everyone learnt the technique.  More practice is needed and I'm confident this take down will be a permanent addition to their BJJ tool box.

Our rolling session went very well.  We had 3 matches going at the same time.  this meant that everyone got to roll multiple times with a wide range of partners.  our senior belts showed some excellent techniques and our newer students surprised me by using what they had learnt so far in their matches.

We couldn't of had such an awesome rolling session without the help of Michael and Raphael.  I really appreciate the help.

Tuesday Training Report

Today we worked on our two bear hug escapes.  Number two needs a bit more work, but it's coming together.  The next step will be to add some real world resistance to test our students technique.

The senior students were taught a shoulder lock which works well to control an opponent.  One more class with this technique and we are ready to go situational.

Saturday at the dojo

Now that the school term has started we are back in full swing.  It's great to see everyone back on the mats.

This term we are focusing on self defense techniques.  Today we refreshed our grip breaking and worked on escaping the bear hug attack from behind.  Everyone did well in learning the technique.  I was very pleased with our senior students for remembering the finer details of the escape.

We caught up 2 students with their stripes at the end of the class.  Congratulations to both of you.  You've earned it.
