Competition schedule for 2018

For those how want to compete in 2018 we will be tailoring our training for the competitions.  The first event in Auckland is on April the 7th and is a no gi contest.

Classes will be no gi to get ready for the competition.  We will be focusing on self defense, strategies for the upcoming matches and the rules of the game.

Attire for class will be a rashy top and spats and shorts.  This is what the students will wear at the comp as well.

It's not mandatory to compete.  If you child shows an interest in competing than that's great.  If don't want to compete that is great too.  They will be part of our junior training camp for their team mates.  Either way they will learn a lot in the coming months.

Training resumes January 2nd.  Let's make the most of it and bring home some medals.

Training report

Merry Christmas everyone

We finished up our series on sweeps from guard this Tuesday.  We worked on the hip bump scissor and pendulum sweeps.  We also threw in a submission setup with the scissor sweep using a cross lapel grip.  Liddy had her 2nd class and learned the sweeps quite well.  As the girls get stronger and grow Aidan will be in trouble.  LOL!

Our last day will be on the 23rd of December and return on the 2nd of January.

I look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

May your Christmas be cheery and bright.

End of Year Graduation

Our first graduation is behind us now.  I look forward to many more in the future.

I want to thank Justin Lewis, Koshinkai Akido, Stuart Mitchell and Serge Morel, founders of Auckland BJJ, for their support and guidance in getting our school up and running. thanks also goes to the families that Want their children to learn the art and lifestyle of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Everyone did a great job showing their favorite Jiu Jitsu technique.  I'm very impressed with how everyone is getting more technical with their Jiu Jitsu.  I really enjoy seeing the students thinking whilst they are working through their techniques.

Graduation time is near

Good day everyone,

We are having our end of year graduation this Saturday the 16th of December 10:00am.  Aidan and I are looking forward to seeing everyone .

The plan is to have a short warm up and then some light training to review what we have worked on since we opened the new dojo.  Then have a short break and line up for stripes.

Please make sure your child has a black patch on their belt so we have a place to put the stripe.

I would like to get some photos for the website with the students and families.  Everyone will be welcome on the mats to take photos as well.

Thanks you to everyone for your support.  I couldn't do it without you.

Regards
Adam

A great day for BJJ

Thanks to everyone that came out today for a a hot training session.

We started our warm  up in the usual way and than switched to see who could remember the new animal we practiced last week.  Olivia was the winner.  We reviewed and did the Seal movement across the mats.  The Seal is an excellent exercise for the back and triceps muscles.  I asked if someone could give me the name of their favorite animal and it was Olivia that was the quickest to name her's.  She called out the worm.   So we did the worm across the mats.  Now it was my turn to call an animal.  I called out the frog jump and after that one we did the spider forwards and backwards then finished with the Elephant walk.

It was time for a quick drink of water and then straight into reviewing our guard sweeps.  Everyone worked the hip bump sweep and the scissor sweep.  I'm very pleased to see everyone show a good technical foundation especially with the scissor sweep.

The new technique today was to have a submission attack directly after performing the sweep.  For the scissor sweep we changed our collar grip setup for same side grip to a cross collar grip.  The sweep is to go in the direction of the cross collar grip and the sleeve grip.  The cross collar grip is palm up and must be deep.  Once the sweep is finished the student is now in the mount with one had already in position for a lapel choke.  All that needs to happen now is for the person on top to take their free hand and slide it deep in the the collar on the opposite side.  Now Squeeze the hand like wringing out a sponge and flex your wrists making sure to keep your elbows in tight.  Now lean forward and put your head on the mat.  If you have your grips deep and your wrists are used correctly you will get the submission every time.

We discussed the elusive invisible Jiu Jitu today.  There are so many small details that aren't readily apparent in all of our defensive and offensive techniques. We ended our training with a nice quiet stretch.

I want to say thanks to all the parents for bringing their children in to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with me and Aidan.  My experience with Aidan and myself has taught me that BJJ will make us physically and mentally stronger.  I thoroughly enjoy watching everyone's progress.

Auckland BJJ Graduation

This evening was our first graduation at Auckland BJJ.  What a great evening to see all the team and watch the students that moved to their next belt.

Aidan got to join in on the warm up and had a roll with me and a roll with Igor.  It was fun to watch Aidan flow and try to figure out Igor's game during their 5 minute round.

Congratulations to all the people that moved up a belt. All of the demonstrations were excellent.  Now it's time for the next level of training. Congratulations to everyone that earned a stripe.  It always feels good to be rewarded for all the hard work and time spent on the mats.

Special thanks go to Professor Stuart and Professor Serge.  Without them a night like tonight would not have been possible. Onward and upward we go.  Oss!

Training Report

Summer is here!

The hot weather is upon us!  It's a good time to have a conversation on how to deal with the heat whilst training.

Firstly anytime you plan on taking a class it is advisable to have a light meal and a big drink of water an hour before hitting the mats.  I've seen students suffer, me included, when they don't look after their hydration and food intake before training.

Student's will be allowed to take water breaks.  Anytime a student wants to leave the mat for anything they must ask the instructor.  This helps me know where everyone is at all times.

One thing that helps with the heat and sweat is a rash guard.  The rash guard helps cool the body, protect your skin from rubbing against the gi and is more hygienic than a soaking wet t-shirt.  I recommend rashy shorts or spats as well.   Italia Sportswear Outlet at Dressmart, Onehunga has children's sizes and the prices are reasonable.  The rash guards below are an example of what can be found at Dressmart.  If you want to by a different brand or something with a cool design go for it.

***WARNING***
A new rash guard must be washed at least twice before using it for training.  When we get sweaty the dye will bleed and stain the mats.  A couple of washes sets the dye.
